I experienced vicarious horror in my Tax law class this morning when the professor began one of those “this is on the test” hypos. The class started typing furiously. Then the girl next to me gasped in horror because her computer’s screen was blue.

Error messages flowed on the screen. There was a bunch of code, but the message was clear: “THOU ARE SCREWED.”

I immediately saved my OneNote files and emailed them to myself.

Most of us are one month into the fall semester. This is long enough to feel utterly screwed if your computer decides to die. Imagine all of your notes, legal research, calendars – everything. Gone. I know, the thought makes me feel ill too.

So, for all the students out there: this is a call to back up your files now. Don't worry about zip disks. Just send your notes to your email. You may thank yourself later.

A good tool to use is www.getdropbox.com where it creates a shared folder on your computer that automatically saves itself to the web. You can also sync the folder over multiple computers, so I keep my OneNote notebooks in there and they automatically sync as I'm working on them.

Fantastic advice. I can't tell you how many times I saw this happen to people in law school. With the meager cost of a flash drive, this is a no brainer.

Thanks for all of the hard work on this web site. I admit, I have not been on this website in a long time, however it was joy to find it again. It is such an important topic and ignored by so many, even professionals! I do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are lost simply just trying to figure out how to begin.
