lawrence velvel: the man, the PR mystery.

Lawrence Velvel, who may be my favorite law school administrator, is up to his old tricks again. Some say the law school dean's a publicity-hound, others say he might just be a little nuts. Either/or, he's in the Boston Globe's headlines again. This time, for creating (almost as if out of thin air) what appears to me to be a feeder college just for his law school.

Students at The American College of History and Legal Studies (you read right; only history will be studied at this school) will have the option, at the start of their fourth year in the undergraduate program, to enroll in Massachusetts School of Law to begin their JD studies. Said students could wrap up both a BA and JD in 5 years, as opposed to the standard 7, and would be guaranteed admission to the law school if they "perform well" at the American College.

“What is intriguing about it is they are going to provide students an opportunity to go on to law school,’’ said Catherine Pride, an associate dean at Middlesex Community College who negotiates Middlesex’s transfer agreements with other institutions. “That’s something that can shorten a student’s road to getting a law degree.’’

(Hat tip to Law School Headlines. Maybe Velvel can team up with K&L Gates chairman Peter Kalis, who apparently has just entered 2009 by questioning the viability of the "law school model." Also convenient for a firm to blame everything on a school, no?)

I applaud Dean Velvel's new business model in forming an undergraduate school to act as a "feeder" for the law school he co-founded. Dean Velvel does seem to have that entrepreneurial spirit. Between arranging nonsensical Bush War Crimes Trials & expending millions in legal fees ( of other people's money) on TWO idiotic antitrust lawsuits against the American Bar Association et al.(BOTH of which he lost, he still finds time to lose his own money with Madoff & launch personal & profane attacks at academics whom he dislikes ("Excuse my French, but what bullshit. What absolute bullshit…. If Alito proves, as threatened, to support the actions of these dangerous and incompetent clowns in the Administration from Bush on down, then all the hoped for Democratic gains of 2006 ....will not make one goddamned bit of difference.") In any event, Dean Velvel has a big ego, he's entitled to big mistakes ;))
