Berkeley’s law school has finally gotten its identity straight. Sort of.
According to a memo posted on its Web site today and first reported by Nuts & Boalts, the school has narrowed its name to just three official versions. That's down from about a dozen that have sprung up informally over time.
The official version: University of California, Berkeley, School of Law.
But that’s a mouthful, says spokeswoman Susan Gluss.
So two shorter versions are also legit: UC Berkeley School of Law, or, if the mood strikes, Berkeley Law.
Gluss explains that UC Berkeley School of Law brings to mind UC Berkeley’s academic excellence, while Berkeley Law mirrors the naming convention of schools in its peer group, like Harvard Law and Stanford Law.
There is a fourth name that University of California, Berkeley, School of Law /UC Berkeley School of Law /Berkeley Law couldn’t let go. Since, according to Gluss, there's a ton of affection within the community for "Boalt Hall," it will continued to be used for communications with alumni and inside the school's network — within the "family." As it were.
At the minimum, this announcement should give some much-needed clarity to reporters here in San Francisco and across the nation.
