It’s that time of year again, and I’m discovering that
choosing classes is never easy. Aside from registration conspiracies
and controversial professors,
I have to think about bar passage and take substantive courses like Evidence and Civil Procedure II. Then I have
to weigh essay v. take-home v. traditional exam. I have to consider classes
that will look good to potential employers. I want to choose my future
professors strategically, perusing online CVs to see who did the job I want to
do or who published that article I really enjoyed.
And then there are the practical concerns. I want to take
the classes my friends take. I don’t want to have another 8am class, but I
don’t want to have to commute to my apartment in Oakland late at night. I want
to be in smaller classes, but I also want to take the most popular (and large)
classes. And of course, I need light Fridays.
To ease my frustrations, and hopefully the frustrations of others like me, I've created a website to rate professors and give Boalt students a place to discuss class options. I've also found that the "Choosing Courses" resource at the Online Academic Support Program For Law Students provides general advice about navigating the process. (Be sure to scroll to the bottom where there is a helpful list of links to other sites with more advice.)
Best of luck choosing your classes, and be sure to share your horror/success stories here.
