John Yoo (aka Capt. Waterboard) and the rest of his pirate crew will have to contend with mutinous anti-torture ninjas Saturday during U.C. Berkeley’s graduation ceremony.
The World Can’t Wait and some members of the Berkeley community are organizing a protest this weekend to call for Yoo - a tenured professor at the university and currently a visiting professor at Chapman University’s School of Law - to walk the plank for his role in writing memos that authorized the use of torture.
Stephanie Tang, an organizer with the group, told MSNBC that it’s “unconscionable that the legal architect of the torture apparatus is teaching the future generation of lawyers and judges at U.C. Berkeley."
The organization also aims to highlight what it calls the “shameless role” of Boalt dean Christopher Edley, whom they accuse of continuing to protect Yoo against investigation and prosecution.
Edley last year wrote a response to those who asked that action be taken against Yoo, who received tenure in 1999.
According to Edley, because Berkeley “is a public university, (Yoo) enjoys not only security of employment and academic freedom, but also First Amendment and Due Process rights.”
Edley states further that assuming “one believes as I do that Professor Yoo offered bad ideas and even worse advice during his government service, that judgment alone would not warrant dismissal or even a potentially chilling inquiry.”
On a side note: referring to Yoo as a pirate gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “drink up me hearties, yo ho.”
