the extra threat of the jd AND mba

[brian lauter]

MBAs. They’re just like us. They get ranked by U.S. News. They worry about recession.  They have rich dads and poor dads.

Some of them walk among us. As Concurring Opinions reports, lost among all of the hullabaloo over Northwestern’s two year JD program, is that Northwestern has been offering a 3 year JD/MBA program for years.

Before I was consumed by frantic 1L stress, I considered getting a JD/MBA. But, Davis’ JD/MBA is a 4 year program and the prospect of an extra year of school was just too much.

Even if you are just going to be a regular old lawyer for the rest of your days, an MBA can pay big dividends. If you’re ever in a position of authority, an MBA could help you make millions for your firm.

For instance, who do you think came up with the idea for the first “sales associate”? Probably an MBA. How about using incentive plans to keep key talent? Probably an MBA.   Outsourcing legal work to India? You get the idea.

So an MBA can help lawyers think outside the box and make a little extra money. It’s a little late for me to get one, though.  I guess I’ll just have to rely on my degree from Hamburger University.
